Zhipu AI Builds Massive 1 GW Data Center Powered Entirely by Domestic Chinese Chips
Chinese AI startup Zhipu AI has reportedly built and partially begun operating a massive 1-gigawatt data center powered entirely by domestic Chinese chips. The facility features multiple computing clusters, each equipped with over 10,000 domestic chips, to support the training of its frontier GLM models. This development marks a major milestone in China's efforts to achieve AI hardware independence amidst US export restrictions on Nvidia chips. It demonstrates that large-scale frontier AI model training is increasingly viable using domestic semiconductor alternatives. The 1 GW power capacity of the data center is equivalent to powering approximately 750,000 homes, making it one of the largest server hubs built by a Chinese AI firm. Zhipu AI, which is competing with rivals like Moonshot AI, has raised billions of dollars through a Hong Kong IPO and is on track to reach $1 billion in annual recurring revenue.
## BACKGROUND
Zhipu AI is a leading Chinese artificial intelligence company known for its GLM (General Language Model) series, including flagship models like GLM-4.5 and GLM-5. Due to US export controls restricting Chinese access to advanced Nvidia GPUs, Chinese tech firms have been forced to seek domestic hardware alternatives. The country has planned to invest around 2 trillion yuan (approximately $295 billion) over five years to build out its national data center infrastructure.
