XPeng Plans to Expand Tech Licensing Solutions to More Overseas Automakers
XPeng is reportedly expanding its technology licensing business beyond its existing partnership with Volkswagen to offer E/E architecture, smart cockpit systems, Turing AI chips, and ADAS software to other international automakers. High-margin technical services (reaching a 75.1% gross margin in Q2) provide XPeng with a crucial revenue stream to offset EV manufacturing losses while expanding China's automotive software footprint globally. Beyond vehicle hardware and software, XPeng plans to include Robotaxi fleet operations, physical AI applications, and humanoid robotics in its commercial licensing portfolio. The company established a dedicated commercialization team six months ago following its successful 24-month joint vehicle development with Volkswagen.
## BACKGROUND
Automotive Electrical/Electronic (E/E) architecture serves as the system blueprint connecting a vehicle's electronic control units, sensors, and software, which is fundamental for modern Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). In July 2023, Volkswagen acquired a 4.99% stake in XPeng for around $700 million to co-develop electric vehicles built on XPeng's technology platform.
