Lu Siyuan, the head of AI Infrastructure at XPeng Motors, is reportedly leaving the company to join OpenAI's embodied robotics research and development team. At XPeng, he managed a team of approximately 200 people covering the entire pipeline from training frameworks to vehicle-side deployment. This transition highlights OpenAI's growing recruitment focus on embodied AI and robotics, drawing top-tier talent from leading autonomous driving companies. It also underscores the critical role of AI infrastructure expertise in bridging the gap between virtual AI models and physical robotic systems. Lu's team at XPeng was crucial for developing compilers and inference runtimes for the company's self-developed chips, enabling end-to-end models to reach mass production. Following his departure, XPeng plans to split his team into three or more independent units to mitigate the impact, as a direct replacement has not yet been found.
