Xinjiang Authorities Debunk Viral AI-Generated Monkey Video
Local authorities in Xinjiang confirmed that viral images and videos showing wild monkeys snatching mobile phones in the Hemu scenic area were AI-generated misinformation. Officials stated that no wild monkey populations inhabit or have ever been recorded in the region. This incident highlights the growing challenge of combating realistic AI-generated misinformation on social media platforms. It demonstrates how easily fabricated content can mislead the public regarding local wildlife and geography. The Cyberspace Administration of Burqin County, in collaboration with the local Wildlife Protection Station under the Forestry and Grassland Bureau, investigated and debunked the rumors. Local authorities have ordered relevant platforms to take down the false posts.
