Xiaomi Pledges 200 Billion RMB R&D Spend to Boost In-House AI and Auto Chips
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced a 200 billion RMB ($28B USD) R&D investment plan over the next five years following praise from Xinhua for the company's core technology self-reliance. The announcement highlights proprietary hardware developments, including Xiaomi's Xring AI and smart driving chips alongside the newly launched Pengcheng EV series. This massive investment underscores Xiaomi's push toward vertical integration and technological autonomy across both consumer electronics and electric vehicles. By designing custom 3nm automotive AI chips and flagship mobile SoCs, Xiaomi aims to reduce reliance on external suppliers and strengthen its competitive position. Xiaomi's semiconductor team of nearly 3,000 experts has spent over 21 billion RMB rebooting chip R&D, creating the Xring O3 flagship SoC, the 1.22 TB/s bandwidth O100 AI accelerator, and the 3nm D100 smart driving chip. Simultaneously, Xiaomi rolled out the Pengcheng (SkyNomad) EV series with four models priced between 209,900 and 299,900 RMB.
## BACKGROUND
Xiaomi established Shanghai Xring Technology in 2021 to reboot its custom mobile system-on-chip (SoC) development after earlier efforts. Beyond mobile devices, the company has heavily expanded into the automotive market by introducing dedicated EV product lines such as the SkyNomad (Pengcheng) series to build a unified ecosystem.
