Xiaohongshu Removes Nearly 120,000 AI-Generated Fake Review Posts
Chinese social platform Xiaohongshu announced that it removed nearly 120,000 posts containing AI-generated fake reviews and images between June and August. The platform has made its governance against AI-fabricated content permanent, focusing on high-risk categories such as travel, accommodation, medical aesthetics, education, and real estate. As generative AI tools make creating convincing fake photos and reviews easier, lifestyle platforms face growing challenges in protecting user trust and consumer purchasing decisions. This enforcement action highlights the increasing push across digital platforms toward mandatory AI content labeling and curbing automated spam. Xiaohongshu's strategy targets AI-generated scenery photos, bulk-generated homogeneous experience notes, and cross-account reuse of identical images or videos. While creator usage of AI tools is still permitted, the platform mandates using official AI disclosure labels and encourages community reporting of violations.
## BACKGROUND
Xiaohongshu is a leading lifestyle sharing and social e-commerce platform in China where users rely heavily on authentic personal reviews for shopping and travel decisions. Generative AI technology allows spammers to automatically fabricate realistic photos, travel logs, and product reviews at scale, which misleads consumers and degrades overall platform quality.
