World's First AI Ultrasound Robot-Guided Congenital Heart Disease Surgery Completed

Researchers from the Sixth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital and Tsinghua University successfully performed the world's first AI ultrasound robot-guided occlusion surgery for congenital heart disease. The robotic system autonomously executed probe scanning, lesion identification, real-time 3D anatomical modeling, and surgical path planning. This breakthrough advances surgical robotics beyond simple instrument delivery to true dual intelligent synergy between real-time medical imaging and surgical intervention. It enables patients with complex anatomical heart defects, who previously required open-heart surgery, to receive safer and more precise minimally invasive treatments. The surgery was successfully performed on a 48-year-old male patient with an atrial septal defect whose challenging anatomical boundaries had previously prompted other hospitals to recommend open-heart surgery. By replacing experience-dependent 2D manual interpretation with standardized 3D robotic navigation, the system eliminated human positioning bias and reduced overall procedure time.

## BACKGROUND

Atrial septal defect is a common congenital heart condition involving an abnormal opening between the heart's upper chambers, often treated by deploying a catheter-guided occluder device to seal the gap. Traditional minimally invasive interventions rely heavily on a physician manually holding an ultrasound probe, which faces inherent challenges regarding probe stability and precise visualization of complex 3D structures.
