WhatsApp Reportedly Developing Native Support for Third-Party AI Agents
WhatsApp is developing native support for third-party AI agents, enabling users to connect external AI assistants directly to private chats using API keys. This feature will allow integration with custom AI agents without risking account bans. This initiative represents a significant policy change for Meta's messaging platform to keep pace with competitor platforms like Telegram, which have already embraced AI bot integrations. It creates a safe, official pipeline for users to interact with personal or self-hosted AI assistants within their primary messaging app. Third-party AI agents will be restricted strictly to one-on-one private chats and cannot be added to group chats or communities. Additionally, these agents will not be allowed to access users' other conversations, contacts, or local files, and WhatsApp will display clear disclaimers that AI responses may contain errors.
