WeChat Tests AI Writing and Commenting Features in Moments via 'Xiaowei' Assistant
WeChat is gray-testing two new AI-powered features, "AI Help Write" and "AI Comment," for its Moments feed. These features are integrated through WeChat's native smart assistant, "Xiaowei," which is currently available to a limited group of test users. This update represents WeChat's effort to integrate generative AI directly into its core social features, lowering the barrier for content creation and interaction. It shows how major social platforms are embedding LLM capabilities natively to enhance user engagement without requiring external apps. The "AI Help Write" feature redirects users to Xiaowei's chat interface, where it analyzes the draft text and images to generate copy in "concise," "banter," or "artistic" styles. While the assistant prepares the text, the final publication still requires manual confirmation by the user.
## BACKGROUND
"Xiaowei" is WeChat's native AI assistant embedded directly into the app's main interface rather than operating as a mini-program or standalone application. It is powered primarily by Tencent's self-developed WeLM large language model, with support from DeepSeek for certain queries. "Gray testing" is a software deployment strategy where a new feature is rolled out to a small percentage of users to test stability and gather feedback before a full release.
