Waymo Unveils Ojai Robotaxi with Gemini AI Integration and Three-Screen Interface
Waymo has introduced its new Ojai autonomous ride-hailing vehicle, featuring a redesigned three-screen passenger interface and the integration of the Gemini AI conversational assistant. Passengers can use "Gemini in Waymo" to control cabin settings, ask questions, and request to pull over. This marks a significant step in deploying Large Language Models (LLMs) within autonomous vehicles to enhance passenger experience while keeping the AI strictly separated from critical driving systems for safety. It highlights how robotaxi companies are shifting focus toward cabin comfort and interactive user experiences. The Gemini AI assistant operates independently of the Waymo Driver system, meaning it cannot control vehicle movement, routing, or access real-time driving data. The vehicle's three screens dynamically adjust content based on passenger seating, including a "Calm Mode" that dims screens to show minimal trip info.
## BACKGROUND
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is a pioneer in autonomous driving technology. The Ojai is its sixth-generation robotaxi, built in partnership with Chinese automaker Zeekr, and is designed specifically for ride-hailing services.
