Waymo Integrates Google Gemini AI Assistant into Ojai Robotaxis
Waymo has announced the integration of Google's Gemini AI assistant into its new Ojai robotaxis, enabling passengers to use voice commands for climate control and local information. The feature is currently in beta and accessible via an on-screen icon in the vehicle. This integration demonstrates the convergence of large language models (LLMs) and autonomous vehicles to enhance the passenger experience. It represents a step toward making robotaxi rides more interactive, personalized, and useful during transit. To ensure safety, Gemini operates independently of the Waymo Driver system, meaning it cannot access real-time driving data or directly control the vehicle's path. However, passengers can request to pull over through Gemini, which then forwards the request to the driving system.
## BACKGROUND
Waymo's Ojai is the company's sixth-generation robotaxi, built on Geely's Zeekr SEA-M platform. It is designed to be a cheaper, mass-scale vehicle to help Waymo achieve profitability. Gemini is Google's multimodal AI model family, which is being integrated across various Google products and services.
