Water UK Warns of Massive Water Demand Surge from Data Center Expansion
Water UK has warned the British government that the rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers will cause a massive surge in water consumption. The association highlighted that current infrastructure planning is based on the outdated assumption that future water demand would decrease. As AI technologies scale, the physical constraints of data centers—specifically water cooling infrastructure—are becoming critical bottlenecks. This warning underscores the tension between national technology growth targets and environmental sustainability, requiring immediate policy adjustments. UK data centers currently consume 6.6 million liters of water daily, but peak summer demand can reach 14 million liters. If data centers triple by 2030, peak demand could soar to 42 million liters per day, necessitating the urgent construction of large-scale water storage facilities.
