Visualizing 55 Cities from Calvino's *Invisible Cities* Using a Single AI Prompt
A developer built interactive web visualizations for all 55 fictional cities in Italo Calvino's classic novel *Invisible Cities* using a single prompt given to an AI model over a six-hour generation period. This project showcases the expanding ability of AI models to handle long-horizon, autonomous creative coding tasks with minimal human intervention. It demonstrates how generative tools are significantly lowering the technical entry barrier for complex web design and data visualization. The automated process produced custom web components for each of the 55 city descriptions directly from one initial instruction. However, some generated visualizations exhibited technical limitations and literal misinterpretations, such as rendering bridges floating in the middle of a river rather than spanning across water.
## BACKGROUND
*Invisible Cities* is a celebrated 1972 novel by Italo Calvino featuring surreal descriptions of 55 fictional cities told through dialogues between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. Anthropic's Claude Opus is an advanced large language model designed for complex multi-step execution, reasoning, and long-form code generation.
