Vercel Labs Releases agent-browser: A Rust CLI for AI Browser Automation
Vercel Labs has launched agent-browser, a new command-line interface written in Rust specifically designed to facilitate browser automation for AI agents. The tool allows AI models to open webpages, read them as an accessibility tree, and interact with elements directly from the shell. This tool addresses the growing need for efficient, programmatic web navigation tailored for AI systems while minimizing context usage. Built entirely in native Rust, it offers high performance and a lightweight footprint for developers building autonomous web-browsing agents. The tool outputs page snapshots as compact text with specific references (such as @e1) for each element to optimize context efficiency. It also supports seamless integration via modern AI coding assistant skill-add commands.
## BACKGROUND
Browser automation traditionally relies on heavy tools like Puppeteer or Playwright designed for end-to-end testing, which can be bloated or inefficient when consumed token-by-token by large language models. AI agents require specialized interfaces to perceive and act on web elements without consuming excessive context window limits.
