US Arrests Tech CEO Over $300 Million Nvidia AI Chip Smuggling Ring to China
The U.S. Department of Justice arrested Greg Lui, CEO of Earthmade Computer, for allegedly smuggling over $300 million worth of export-restricted Nvidia AI hardware into China between October 2023 and August 2026. The illicit shipments involved enterprise chips like the Nvidia A100 and H100, as well as high-end consumer GPUs, transshipped through Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. This enforcement action underscores the challenges U.S. authorities face in clamping down on illicit supply chains designed to bypass export controls on critical AI technologies. It shows how smuggling networks utilize transshipment hubs, shell orders, and identity theft to funnel advanced computing power to Chinese entities despite national security restrictions. Lui allegedly created fraudulent paperwork under a stolen identity to order servers and generated over $176 million in illegal revenue in 2024 alone. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison for charges including conspiracy to violate the Export Control Reform Act, smuggling, and money laundering.
## BACKGROUND
High-performance GPUs such as the Nvidia A100 (Ampere architecture) and Nvidia H100 (Hopper architecture) serve as the backbone for high-performance computing, data analytics, and training large language models. To prevent China from advancing its artificial intelligence and military capabilities using American technology, the U.S. government placed strict export controls restricting sales of these specialized data center processors to Chinese firms.
