US Army Establishes Autonomous Systems Command to Accelerate Military Robotics

The U.S. Army is establishing a new Army Futures and Autonomous Systems Command alongside dedicated procurement roles to accelerate the acquisition and operational deployment of autonomous robotics. This directive follows the Pentagon's announcement of Project Meridian and Project Agincourt aimed at embedding autonomous warfare capabilities across the joint force. This strategic restructuring signals a shift from treating robotics as experimental add-ons to fully integrating autonomous systems into core combat, armor, sustainment, and aviation branches. Driven by lessons from modern battlefield conflict, the initiative aims to maintain technological overmatch through crewed-uncrewed teaming. The directive mandates expanding dedicated military occupational specialties—specifically MOS 15X (Tactical Unmanned Aerial System Specialist) and MOS 390A (Robotics Technician)—across all applicable units. It also appoints a Portfolio Acquisition Executive focused on accelerating autonomous firepower, combat vehicles, waterborne resupply, breaching, and target acquisition capabilities.

## BACKGROUND

Recent modern conflicts, particularly in Eastern Europe, have demonstrated the transformative impact of uncrewed aerial, ground, and surface systems in high-intensity combat. Military leadership has long advocated for crewed-uncrewed teaming, but scaling these capabilities requires specialized operational roles, targeted procurement processes, and centralized command structures.
