US Air Traffic System to Pilot $875M AI Airspace Management Tool SMART
The US Federal Aviation Administration is launching a pilot program for an AI-powered air traffic management software called SMART, starting as early as September 21 in Washington, D.C. The $875 million system will analyze airline schedules, weather forecasts, and runway capacities to predict traffic flow before a nationwide rollout. With aging infrastructure and ongoing staffing shortages straining the US aviation network, deploying AI to air traffic control can significantly reduce flight delays and congestion. This represents one of the largest national infrastructure integration projects for AI technology to date. SMART utilizes high-fidelity 4D modeling to anticipate airspace bottlenecks and schedule conflicts before aircraft leave the ground. To maximize effectiveness, FAA officials are working directly with commercial airlines to adjust departure times and align flight schedules dynamically.
