Unitree Launches R1 Bionic 7-Axis Robotic Arm Starting at 9,900 RMB
Unitree has officially launched the R1, a lightweight bionic 7-axis robotic arm priced starting at 9,900 RMB. The R1 features a 2kg payload capacity, a 650mm maximum reach, and a total weight of just 5.5kg. By offering a 7-axis robotic arm at an extremely low price point, Unitree significantly lowers the hardware barrier to entry for robotics research, education, and embodied AI development. This could accelerate the deployment of dexterous manipulation capabilities in desktop environments and mobile robot integrations. The R1 supports hybrid position/torque control with built-in force feedback and collision detection, running on an Ubuntu-based environment with XT30 and CAN485 interfaces. However, due to its low joint reduction ratio, it has limited position control stiffness and may exhibit position errors during dynamic tasks if control strategies are not optimized.
## BACKGROUND
A redundant manipulator in robotics is an arm with more than the minimum six degrees of freedom required to position and orient an end effector in 3D space, allowing it to avoid obstacles and work in tight spaces. An end effector is the device at the end of a robotic arm, such as a gripper or a bionic hand, designed to interact with the environment.
