UMC Announces $4.5B Expansion in Singapore and Taiwan
Taiwanese chipmaker UMC has announced a 146.86 billion NTD (approximately $4.5 billion USD) phased investment plan. The funds will be used to build cleanrooms and procure equipment for silicon photonics in Singapore, and to construct a new fab facility in Tainan, Taiwan. This expansion directly addresses the surging demand for high-performance, high-bandwidth, and highly integrated system technologies driven by the generative AI boom. By investing in silicon photonics, UMC positions itself to capture critical market share in next-generation optical interconnects and AI hardware. In Singapore, UMC will utilize its completed but vacant P4 facility for cleanroom setup and equipment installation. In Tainan, the new construction will serve as the foundation for the future P7 and P8 phases of its manufacturing hub.
## BACKGROUND
Silicon photonics is an emerging technology that uses silicon as an optical medium to transmit data using light instead of electrical signals. This technology is crucial for overcoming the physical limitations of traditional copper wiring, enabling faster data transfer speeds and lower power consumption in data centers and AI hardware.
