TSMC Expands US Investment by $100 Billion Amid Sustained AI Chip Demand

TSMC has announced an additional $100 billion investment to expand its manufacturing presence in Arizona, raising its total commitment in the state to $265 billion. This expansion is driven by strong, multi-year structural demand for AI chips from major clients like Nvidia. This massive expansion highlights the strategic shift in semiconductor manufacturing towards the US, aligned with political goals to bring chip production back to America. It also signals long-term confidence in the AI infrastructure boom despite recent market volatility and concerns over its sustainability. TSMC plans to establish up to 12 fabrication and advanced packaging facilities in Arizona, along with a research and development center. However, the expansion faces practical constraints, including a shortage of local construction workers and infrastructure capacity limitations.

## BACKGROUND

Advanced packaging technology, such as TSMC's CoWoS, is crucial for high-performance AI chips as it integrates multiple chips into a single package to boost performance. Semiconductor yield, which measures the percentage of usable chips on a wafer, is a critical metric for profitability, and TSMC's first Arizona fab has reportedly achieved yields comparable to its Taiwan facilities.
