Toyota to Launch AI L2++ Driver-Assist System by 2028
Toyota announced plans to introduce an advanced 'L2++' driver-assistance system on 2028 model vehicles, aiming to compete with Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD). Unlike Tesla's pure end-to-end AI approach, Toyota's architecture pairs AI with a deterministic 'guardrail' system that monitors software behavior and intervenes when anomalies occur. This strategy highlights a distinct technical path in autonomous driving, prioritizing safety guardrails and explainability over pure neural-network models. It also signals that Japanese automakers are accelerating efforts to close the software gap with US and Chinese EV competitors.
