Texas Governor Orders Audit of Data Center Projects Amid 400GW Grid Demand
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to conduct a comprehensive audit of all data center projects seeking grid connection. This directive comes as ERCOT reviews approximately 474GW of connection requests, with about 90% originating from data centers. As Texas is a major hub for AI and cloud computing infrastructure, halting or delaying these projects due to grid capacity constraints could significantly slow down the scaling pace of the tech industry. It highlights the growing tension between the rapid expansion of energy-intensive AI technologies and the physical limitations of regional power grids. The audit will scrutinize not only power and water requirements but also the funding, community impact, and ownership structures of the data center projects. The total requested capacity of 474GW is more than five times the current peak power demand of the Texas grid.
