Tesla Rolls Out FSD v14 Lite to Intel-Powered HW3 Model S and X
Tesla has begun rolling out the distilled FSD v14.3 Lite update (software version 2026.38.5.1) to older Model S and X vehicles equipped with HW3 hardware and Intel chips. This marks the first time these older vehicles are receiving a distilled FSD branch system. This update demonstrates Tesla's capability to bring advanced autonomous driving capabilities, such as reinforcement learning improvements from HW4, to resource-constrained older hardware. However, Tesla has confirmed that HW3 will not support unsupervised FSD or the upcoming FSD v15, making v14 Lite the final major FSD branch for these platforms. While the Intel-powered HW3 Model S and X receive features like speed profiles and a disengagement counter, they lack parking-related features, auto-reversing, and Smart Summon currently available on newer or AMD-powered counterparts. Tesla has promised a hardware upgrade path to newer AI chips for owners who purchased FSD.
## BACKGROUND
Model distillation in machine learning is the process of compressing a large, complex model into a smaller, more efficient one that retains most of the original performance. HW3 refers to Tesla's third-generation Hardware Self-Driving computer, which features less processing power and memory compared to the newer HW4 system.
