Tesla Renames 'Full Self-Driving' to 'Tesla Assisted Driving' in Europe

Tesla has agreed to rename its software from 'Full Self-Driving (Supervised)' to 'Tesla Assisted Driving' in the European market. The concession follows objections from the German Ministry of Transport, which argued that the original name was misleading to consumers. The name change helps Tesla clear a major regulatory hurdle in Europe, paving the way for EU approval and unlocking a potential revenue stream across the continent. It also highlights the growing global scrutiny over how automakers market Level 2 driver-assistance features to the public. German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger noted that because the system cannot complete all driving tasks independently, the name 'Full Self-Driving' was inaccurate. Following Tesla's voluntary rename, Bilger stated he will push for the system's approval in Europe, with an EU vote expected as early as later this year.

## BACKGROUND

Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) use cameras and sensors to automate tasks like steering and braking, but they still require active human supervision at all times. Tesla's FSD system operates as a Level 2 technology requiring driver intervention, despite its historical branding suggesting full autonomy. European regulatory bodies generally enforce stricter rules than US agencies regarding vehicle safety standards and consumer protection against misleading terminology.
