Tesla FSD Faces Scrutiny in Europe Over Speeding and Overtaking Concerns
Road safety testing by Belgian advocacy group Johanna.be revealed that Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system frequently exceeds speed limits and attempts illegal overtakes of cyclists in European urban areas. The group has submitted its report to regulators in Belgium and the Netherlands, urging them to re-evaluate their recent safety approvals. As Tesla prepares for a potential EU-wide approval vote for FSD, these findings highlight major compliance issues with local traffic regulations. The report underscores the challenge autonomous driving technologies face when adapting to strict European urban infrastructure and speed limits. During 400 km of testing around Brussels, FSD averaged 44 km/h in 30 km/h zones and displayed an incorrect 50 km/h limit on the screen despite camera recognition of the 30 km/h signs. Regulators responded by emphasizing that drivers remain 100% legally responsible for vehicle behavior and must intervene if the system breaks traffic laws.
