Tencent Tests 'AI Processing' Image Tools and Xiaowei AI Features in WeChat
Tencent is testing a new 'AI Processing' option within WeChat's image-sending interface, offering built-in tools for image beautification, object removal, expanding photos, and text extraction. Powered by Tencent's Xiaowei AI assistant, the rollout also introduces AI article summarization, automated image captioning, and context-aware comment suggestions for social posts. Embedding generative AI directly into WeChat's core messaging and media tools turns China's dominant super-app into an active AI assistant platform for over 1.4 billion users. This rollout highlights Tencent's strategy to embed multimodal AI capabilities directly into daily communication routines rather than relying solely on a standalone chatbot. The 'AI Processing' menu divides features into three categories: beautification (style transfer, face retouching), modification (object removal, upscaling, mosaic), and information extraction (translation, document generation). Users can also use natural language in chat boxes or voice inputs to request instant translations, text rephrasing, or visual object analysis.
## BACKGROUND
WeChat, developed by Tencent, is China's dominant messaging and social media super-app with more than 1.4 billion monthly active users. Tencent has been building its proprietary WeLM family of large language models, which powers Xiaowei, an AI assistant designed to execute native tasks within the WeChat ecosystem.
