Tencent Releases Octop, an Open-Source Self-Hosted Multi-Agent AI Assistant Platform
Tencent Cloud has open-sourced Octop, a fully self-hosted multi-agent AI assistant platform designed for individuals, families, and teams. The system runs locally on a user's hardware via a single-process startup, featuring a web dashboard, native desktop clients, CLI commands, and host remote desktop control. Octop provides a privacy-first alternative to commercial cloud AI solutions by keeping all data and execution entirely local. It significantly expands the local LLM ecosystem by combining multi-agent coordination, broad cross-platform deployment (including NAS operating systems like fnOS), and full API connectivity. The application offers a web management console for agents, cron jobs, knowledge bases, and plugins, along with direct browser-based remote control of the host machine's desktop session. Users can deploy Octop as a native app on Windows, macOS, Linux, and fnOS NAS systems, or run it in a containerized Docker environment.
## BACKGROUND
Self-hosted AI platforms enable users to run models and automations on their own hardware, offering full data sovereignty and elimination of subscription fees. A multi-agent AI architecture distributes complex tasks across multiple specialized AI agents that collaborate, improving problem-solving capabilities compared to relying on a single general model.
