Tencent Denies Rumors of Restructuring Its IEG AI Game Department
Tencent representatives clarified that recent media reports claiming the company is restructuring its Interactive Entertainment Group (IEG) to create a new AI game department are highly inaccurate. The company stated that the Game AI Engine department already exists under its game technology public line and continues to recruit AI talent. This clarification dispels speculation about a massive organizational shift toward AI-native game development at Tencent, while confirming that the company maintains its existing, steady focus on integrating AI into game production pipelines. Rumors had suggested Tencent would merge ARC Lab with the Game AI Engine department to expand the team to 400–500 people. Tencent clarified that the existing Game AI Engine department focuses on improving efficiency in game development and operations, as well as gameplay innovation, rather than forming a brand-new entity.
## BACKGROUND
Tencent's Interactive Entertainment Group (IEG) is the division responsible for its massive gaming portfolio. Within IEG, the Common R&D and Operation System (CROS) acts as a technical middleware platform providing shared R&D, security, and quality solutions across various game projects. AI-native games refer to games where generative AI is deeply integrated into the core gameplay loop rather than just used as a development tool.
