Synopsys and Amazon Sign $1B+ Strategic Partnership for Custom Silicon Development
Synopsys and Amazon have signed a multi-year strategic agreement worth over $1 billion to accelerate AWS's custom chip design using Synopsys semiconductor IP and AI-driven engineering software. Under the partnership, Synopsys tools will be optimized for AWS Trainium and Graviton processors while Synopsys uses AWS cloud services to accelerate its own software development. This multi-billion-dollar deal highlights the intense effort by cloud providers like AWS to build in-house custom silicon for AI and general compute workloads. It also underscores how leading Electronic Design Automation (EDA) providers are shifting design workloads to cloud infrastructure and integrating generative AI tools to handle complex chip design. Synopsys engineering teams will adopt Amazon EC2 and Amazon Bedrock to speed up the development of their next-generation tools. In return, AWS gains specialized optimizations across Synopsys's design and IP suite specifically tailored for its custom silicon chips.
## BACKGROUND
AWS designs its own custom processors, including Graviton for cloud workloads and Trainium for high-performance AI training and inference, to optimize performance and lower operational costs. Synopsys is a global leader in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software and semiconductor IP, providing essential tools used by engineers to design complex microchips. Amazon Bedrock is a managed AWS service that offers unified API access to foundational generative AI models.
