Study Links Heavy ChatGPT Reliance to Reduced Independent Thinking

A qualitative study published in Applied Cognitive Psychology surveyed 45 daily ChatGPT users aged 18 to 25 in France, finding that heavy reliance on the AI tool was associated with reduced independent thinking, shorter attention spans, and diminished memory retention. Some heavy users reported feeling anxious when the chatbot was unavailable or favoring interactions with AI over friends and colleagues. As generative AI tools become ubiquitous in education and knowledge work, understanding their psychological trade-offs is critical for establishing healthy human-AI collaboration habits. It underscores the delicate balance between using AI to boost productivity and risking cognitive atrophy through over-delegation. Researchers framed the negative effects around 'cognitive offloading,' where individuals outsource memory and decision-making to external devices. However, the study also observed that participants who selectively used ChatGPT as a brainstorming partner—rather than a substitute for thought—reported increased confidence and creativity.
