Study Finds 20% of Self-Published Amazon Novels Contain Substantial AI Content
A study analyzing 14,419 self-published novels on Amazon from 2023 to March 2026 revealed that approximately 20% of these books contain substantial AI-generated content, meaning at least 25% of the text was written by AI. Additionally, AI-generated content was detected in about 33% of new books entering the bestseller lists during this period. The influx of AI-generated books has led to a 38-fold increase in the volume of novels over three years, while quarterly revenue only grew nine-fold. This market dilution is squeezing the average income of human authors and pushing their works down the bestseller rankings. The researchers used Pangram's AI detection tool to scan the books, which categorizes texts based on stylistic patterns. However, the study's reliance on third-party AI detectors introduces potential limitations, as these tools are known to have varying accuracy rates and false positives.
