SPOPI: A Tauri-Based UI for Pi That the AI Agent Can Modify Live

Developer spongioblast released SPOPI, an open-source, fully local Tauri 2 GUI and editor for the Pi AI coding agent. By using plain JavaScript inside the native OS webview rather than a bundled app file, SPOPI enables Pi to dynamically modify and customize its own UI in real time upon request. Unlike traditional Electron desktop applications that require a complete rebuild to update front-end components, SPOPI demonstrates a self-modifying UI pattern managed directly by an AI agent. This approach offers a novel lightweight framework for local-first AI development tools where agents adapt their own interfaces to user preferences. SPOPI leverages Rust for system operations, file management, Git integration, and terminal handling while sharing sessions and packages seamlessly with the command-line Pi interface. It includes per-turn diff and undo history, chat forking, local network mobile access, and built-in integration for tools like Model Context Protocol (MCP), LM Studio, and vLLM.

## BACKGROUND

Tauri is an open-source software framework designed for building lightweight cross-platform desktop applications using native system webviews and Rust backends. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that standardizes how artificial intelligence systems connect and interact with external data sources, tools, and local development environments.
