Spark-X2.6-1.7B: Small Language Model Approaching 4B Performance
XHToken has released Spark-X2.6-1.7B, a small language model with 1.7 billion parameters that achieves performance comparable to larger 4B models. It scores 59.8 on SWE Verified and 85.3 on τ²-bench when operating under high thinking mode. This release demonstrates significant efficiency gains in small language models, enabling complex coding and reasoning tasks on resource-constrained devices. It highlights how smaller architectures can punch above their weight class through advanced training techniques and thinking modes. Spark-X2.6-1.7B has less than half the parameters of the 4B model it is compared against, yet trails by only a narrow margin on SWE Verified (59.8 vs 62.8) and τ²-bench (85.3 vs 86.9). The model is publicly available on Hugging Face for developers to test and evaluate.
## BACKGROUND
SWE Verified is a widely-cited benchmark that evaluates AI coding agents on real-world GitHub issues from Python repositories. τ²-bench is an authoritative agent evaluation benchmark launched by Princeton University and Sierra Research to test how models coordinate and guide users to achieve shared objectives.
