SpaceXAI Plans Massive Texas AI Data Center and Orbital Compute Expansion
SpaceXAI is planning to build a massive ground-based AI data center in Texas that will match or exceed the scale of its Colossus cluster in Tennessee. Additionally, the company is advancing its "AI1" satellite initiative to deploy orbital AI computing infrastructure manufactured at its new Gigasat factory. This expansion highlights the convergence of aerospace engineering, satellite internet, and AI infrastructure, positioning SpaceXAI as a major compute provider for giants like Google and Anthropic. If successful, orbital computing could offer a cheaper, solar-powered alternative to energy-intensive terrestrial data centers by 2031. SpaceXAI has reportedly secured a compute supply deal with Google to provide approximately 110,000 GPUs through 2029, generating around $920 million monthly, while Anthropic utilizes Colossus 1's full capacity. For space-based compute, SpaceX has applied to the FCC to deploy up to 1 million orbital computing satellites, each supporting up to 150 kilowatts of compute load.
## BACKGROUND
The Colossus supercomputer, originally built by Elon Musk's xAI in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the world's largest AI training clusters. Space-based computing, or orbital edge computing, involves running AI inference and data processing directly on satellites using solar power, reducing latency for space applications and bypassing Earth's grid constraints.
