SpaceX and Tesla to Build Natural Gas Power Plant for Texas Terafab Chip Factory
SpaceX and Tesla have announced plans to construct a dedicated natural gas power plant and a large-scale battery storage system to power their new $16.8 billion Terafab AI chip manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas. This off-grid energy setup aims to address environmental concerns and avoid putting strain on the local Texas power grid (ERCOT). As AI chip manufacturing demands massive amounts of energy, tech giants are increasingly building their own dedicated power infrastructure to ensure reliability and independence from fragile public grids. Additionally, SpaceX will manage local water resources by using its Navasota River pump station to direct rainwater into the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, mitigating local water depletion concerns.

Terafab is a massive, vertically integrated semiconductor fabrication plant jointly developed by Tesla, SpaceX, and Intel, designed to produce over one terawatt of AI compute capacity annually.
