SpaceX and Nvidia Partner to Develop Starmind AI1 Computing Satellites
SpaceX has reportedly partnered with Nvidia to develop the "Starmind AI1" satellite constellation, aiming to deploy up to one million orbital satellites to build a distributed space-based AI supercomputer. The satellites are planned to carry Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale systems to perform datacenter-class workloads in space. This project represents an ambitious attempt to move AI data centers into orbit, potentially bypassing terrestrial land and power constraints. However, the extreme power and cooling requirements of Nvidia's high-performance hardware make the feasibility of this massive constellation highly questionable. Each Starmind satellite is designed to feature Nvidia Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs connected via laser links for high-speed data transmission. Industry experts note that deploying power-hungry rack-scale systems like the NVL72 in space is highly unrealistic given current satellite power generation capabilities.
