Sony Patent Introduces AI Frame Prediction to Reduce Gaming Stutter and Latency

Sony has filed a patent for an AI-driven technique that predicts and displays upcoming game frames before the GPU finishes rendering them. This method bypasses the need to wait for two fully rendered frames before generating an intermediate frame, aiming to smooth out frame output pacing. Traditional frame generation techniques often introduce extra latency because they require waiting for multiple rendered frames to synthesize an intermediate one. By utilizing AI to predict frames concurrently with the graphics pipeline, this technology could significantly reduce input lag and combat stuttering during heavy workloads. The patented system operates in parallel with the graphics rendering pipeline, using jointly trained codecs and neural networks that incorporate motion vectors and recent player controller inputs. However, its real-world effectiveness relies heavily on whether the AI can generate accurate frames rapidly enough to fill gaps when rendering speeds drop.

## BACKGROUND

Traditional frame generation is an algorithmic technique used to boost frame rates in video games by inserting intermediate frames, but it traditionally requires waiting for consecutive rendered frames and can suffer from processing delays. The graphics rendering pipeline is the foundational set of steps that a GPU performs to translate 3D scene data into a 2D image displayed on the screen, while motion vectors track pixel movement from frame to frame to assist with visual algorithms like temporal anti-aliasing.
