Sony Brings Lightweight AI Upscaling Technology QSSR to Standard PS5 Consoles

Sony PlayStation announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a lightweight AI-based super-resolution upscaling technology designed specifically for standard PS5 consoles. Co-developed with AMD under "Project Amethyst," QSSR debuts in upcoming titles like Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. By bringing machine-learning upscaling to base PS5 hardware, Sony enables improved visual clarity and frame rate stability without requiring dedicated AI hardware upgrades. This demonstrates how optimized, lightweight neural networks can extend the graphical capabilities and longevity of existing gaming hardware. QSSR is a streamlined adaptation of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) introduced on the PS5 Pro, utilizing a simplified neural network optimized for standard PS5 hardware. It allows games to render at lower native resolutions while reconstructing fine details and maintaining temporal image stability with minimal performance overhead.

## BACKGROUND

Super-resolution techniques, such as NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, render games at lower internal resolutions and use spatial or temporal algorithms to upscale them to high-definition displays. Sony originally debuted PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro to achieve higher effective resolutions. Project Amethyst is an ongoing architectural collaboration between Sony and AMD focused on next-generation graphics rendering capabilities.
