Sony and TSMC to Invest 1 Trillion Yen in Next-Gen Image Sensors

Sony and TSMC plan to establish a joint venture by fiscal year 2026, investing approximately 1 trillion yen to mass-produce next-generation image sensors in Kumamoto, Japan, by 2029. Sony will hold a 60% stake in the venture, while TSMC will own the remaining 40%. This partnership aims to supply high-performance camera sensors for smartphones like Apple's iPhone and target the emerging "Physical AI" market, including autonomous vehicles and robotics. It will help Sony defend its dominant market share against rising competition from Samsung and OmniVision. The production lines and R&D facilities will be built at Sony's existing factory in Koshi, Kumamoto, utilizing local water resources and renewable energy. While collaborating, Sony plans to keep its core proprietary manufacturing technologies confidential from TSMC.

## BACKGROUND

Physical AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that interact directly with the physical world by combining AI models with sensors, actuators, and machines like robots or self-driving cars. CMOS image sensors are crucial components in these systems, acting as the "eyes" that allow machines to perceive and analyze their surroundings.
