SoftBank's SB Energy Accelerates IPO with $400B Data Center Backlog
SoftBank's data center and energy infrastructure subsidiary, SB Energy, is accelerating its IPO to raise $5 billion to $7 billion. Despite having no current revenue from data center projects, the company has secured over $400 billion in contract backlogs. This IPO highlights the massive capital requirements and surging demand for AI infrastructure, driven by close partnerships with industry giants like OpenAI and NVIDIA. It also underscores the complex financial interdependencies within the AI ecosystem, where major players act as investors, customers, and suppliers to one another. SB Energy has contracted nearly 9GW of computing capacity, with 800MW currently under construction. OpenAI has invested $500 million in the company and received $5.5 billion in warrants, while NVIDIA has invested $3 billion through private transactions.
## BACKGROUND
Modern AI workloads require massive amounts of electricity, making power capacity (measured in megawatts, MW, or gigawatts, GW) the primary metric for data center scale rather than physical space. SB Energy specializes in developing powered data center sites that combine grid-connected energy with digital infrastructure to support these high-density computing needs.
