Sichuan Man Detained for Harassing Online Acquaintance with AI-Synthesized Fake Photos
A man surnamed Xu in Sichuan, China, was administratively detained for five days after using AI technology to synthesize fake private photos of an online acquaintance to harass and threaten her. The victim successfully preserved chat logs and screenshots as evidence before the suspect could recall the messages, leading to his arrest. This case underscores the rising threat of AI-generated content being weaponized for personal harassment and blackmail, highlighting the need for strict legal enforcement. It also demonstrates the critical role of digital evidence preservation for victims facing cyber harassment. The suspect, Xu, attempted to delete the evidence by recalling the sent photos on WeChat, but the victim's proactive screenshotting allowed police to build a complete chain of evidence. Xu was penalized under Article 42 of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Penalties for Administration of Public Security.
## BACKGROUND
Deepfake and AI face-swapping technologies use deep learning algorithms to replace a person's face in an image or video with another, creating highly realistic synthetic media. While these tools have creative applications, they are increasingly exploited for non-consensual pornography, harassment, and identity theft. Law enforcement agencies worldwide are updating legal frameworks to address these emerging forms of digital abuse.
