Server CPU Delivery Times Stretch to 25–30 Weeks Amid AI Agent Demand
A report by market research firm TrendForce reveals that global server CPU lead times have extended to 25–30 weeks, up from the normal 16–20 weeks. This demand surge is heavily influenced by personal AI agents like Meta's Muse, which require dedicated cloud virtual machines to run continuous background tasks. While AI hardware discussions often focus on GPUs, agentic AI workloads require extensive host compute and continuous orchestration, shifting server bottlenecks back toward CPUs and DRAM. This severe supply crunch could elevate infrastructure costs and slow data center expansion plans for cloud providers globally. Each instance of Meta's Muse runs in an isolated virtual machine configured with 2 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, and 100GB SSD, creating a demand scale of millions of extra CPU cores. Furthermore, TrendForce reported that DRAM lead times have stretched to 20 weeks, compared to an 8-week baseline in a balanced market.
## BACKGROUND
Unlike standard chatbots that respond only to single prompts, AI agents autonomously perform multi-step tasks in the background, such as web browsing and app management. To maintain user privacy and security, cloud vendors isolate these background agents inside Virtual Machines (VMs), creating persistent system workloads that depend directly on server CPU capacity.
