Semiconductor Equipment Makers Start 2029 Supply Talks Amid AI Boom
Driven by soaring demand for AI chips and aggressive capacity expansions, major semiconductor equipment manufacturers have begun 2029 supply negotiations and are finalizing 2028 contracts. Traditional delivery lead times have extended significantly, forcing chipmakers to plan years in advance. This extreme supply chain bottleneck highlights how the artificial intelligence hardware boom is straining the entire semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. If equipment cannot be delivered on time, the expansion of global AI computing power could face severe growth constraints. While supply constraints have primarily affected front-end semiconductor equipment so far, shortages threaten to spread to back-end manufacturing processes as well. Major equipment makers include industry giants such as ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, TEL, and KLA.
## BACKGROUND
Semiconductor fabrication is generally divided into front-end processes, which involve wafer fabrication and photolithography to draw circuits on silicon wafers, and back-end processes, which handle chip packaging and testing. Traditionally, chipmakers finalize equipment orders 6 to 12 months prior to deployment, but unprecedented demand has drastically stretched these timelines.
