Samsung to Release LPDDR5X-PIM in August 2026 for Edge AI
Samsung Electronics is expected to officially release its LPDDR5X-PIM (Processing-in-Memory) technology in August 2026, detailing its hardware specifications and commercialization roadmap. The technology integrates computing units directly inside the DRAM die to target edge and on-device AI applications. By embedding logic units directly into the memory, this technology aims to mitigate the "memory wall" bottleneck and reduce energy consumption during data transfer. This is crucial for improving the performance and efficiency of next-generation on-device AI applications, such as smartphones and edge devices. The LPDDR5X-PIM memory is designed to pair with advanced processors, such as South Korean AI chip startup DeepX's upcoming 2nm DX-M2 chip. This integration helps minimize data movement latency between the processor and memory.

Processing-in-Memory (PIM) is an architectural approach that performs computing operations directly inside or near the memory, rather than sending data back and forth to a separate CPU or GPU.
