Samsung's 12-Layer HBM4E Reportedly Passes Nvidia Quality Validation

Samsung Electronics' 12-layer stacked HBM4E memory has reportedly passed quality validation testing with Nvidia and major hyperscale data center operators in late September. Although product samples were released earlier in the year, exact supply volumes, contract sizes, and shipping schedules have not yet been finalized. Passing Nvidia's qualification is a critical hurdle for Samsung to regain lost ground in the high-bandwidth memory market for next-generation AI accelerators. Success in this validation could position Samsung as a key supplier alongside SK Hynix in the rapidly growing AI hardware supply chain. The 48GB 12Hi HBM4E stack integrates 1c nm DRAM dies with a 4nm logic base die, supporting pin transfer speeds of 14 to 16 Gbps. It reportedly achieves a 16% improvement in energy efficiency and a 14% improvement in thermal resistance over prior iterations, though Samsung officially stated it 'cannot confirm' the validation results.

## BACKGROUND

High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) stacks multiple DRAM dies vertically on a base die to deliver massive data throughput required by high-performance AI processors. Starting with HBM4 and HBM4E, memory makers are transitioning base dies from traditional DRAM processes to advanced sub-5nm logic nodes to reduce power consumption and improve inter-chip communication density.
