Roland Launches Melody Flip, an AI Plugin for Generating MIDI Melodies and Chords

Audio manufacturer Roland has entered the generative AI music market with Melody Flip, a DAW plugin designed to generate musical loops, chord progressions, basslines, and drum patterns. The plugin features about 250 genre-categorized preset collections called "Palette" and can also extend melodies based on imported reference tracks. Unlike end-to-end AI music platforms such as Suno or Udio that output finished audio songs, Roland focuses on assisting music producers with editable MIDI building blocks inside standard recording software. This strategy integrates generative AI directly into professional music production workflows as a creative starting point rather than a replacement for whole song composition. Melody Flip does not rely on text prompts, instead allowing users to control parameters such as musical style, note density, tempo (BPM), and key. The resulting MIDI data can be directly dragged into a DAW for further note editing and sound design using external software synthesizers.

## BACKGROUND

A Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is a software environment used by musicians to record, arrange, edit, and mix audio projects. MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a standardized protocol that transmits note instructions, timing, and velocity rather than recorded audio signals. Because MIDI data contains musical performance information, producers can assign it to any virtual instrument or synthesizer to change sounds freely.
