Reuters/Ipsos Poll: 73% of Americans Believe AI Companies Lack Sufficient Safety Measures
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that 73% of Americans feel AI companies are doing insufficient work to prevent severe societal harm. Furthermore, 39% of respondents now view AI as having a negative impact on society, the highest level recorded since polling began in March. The findings highlight growing public anxiety over AI risks and strong demand for government intervention in setting safety regulations. This sentiment indicates that the public prefers safe, responsible AI advancement over unconstrained tech growth or national dominance in the sector. The survey of 1,277 U.S. adults found that 55% support slowing down AI development, compared to only 13% who oppose it. Additionally, 73% prioritized developing AI safely and responsibly over leading the world in AI technology (23%).
