Reliance Jio Opens JioPC Cloud Computer Service to All Internet Users in India

Reliance Jio has expanded its JioPC cloud computer service, making it available as a standalone subscription to all internet users across India regardless of their broadband provider. The service allows legacy hardware—even 8-year-old PCs—to stream a cloud virtual desktop capable of running modern applications and AI workloads. As PC replacement cycles in India stretch to 5–6 years, JioPC offers an affordable alternative to buying expensive native AI PCs by shifting heavy workloads to cloud data centers. This Desktop-as-a-Service model could shift consumer behavior toward paying for compute capacity on demand rather than frequently upgrading physical hardware. JioPC plans offer configurations up to 8 virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage, with pricing starting at 1,000 Indian rupees (~$12 USD) for two months. However, the service faces adoption challenges such as heavy reliance on stable internet connectivity in smaller towns and competition from low-cost refurbished PCs.

## BACKGROUND

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) is a cloud computing model where a vendor hosts and manages virtual desktop environments, streaming the operating system and applications directly to a user's device over the internet. This approach allows legacy or low-spec hardware to function as a terminal display for powerful cloud-based compute resources. By offloading processing tasks to remote servers, users can run modern software without purchasing expensive new local components.
