Reflection AI Announces Beam 501B-A23B Open-Weight Model

Reflection AI has announced Beam 501B-A23B, its first open-weight AI model scheduled for release later this month. The model features 501 billion total parameters with 23 billion active parameters per token. This release represents a significant contribution from a US lab to the open-weight AI ecosystem, offering a large-scale alternative to frontier open models developed in China. It gives developers and researchers open access to a high-capacity model engineered for complex reasoning, coding, and agentic workflows. Beam utilizes a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, maintaining compute efficiency during inference by routing requests through only 23 billion active parameters out of 501 billion total. The model is fine-tuned specifically to excel at software engineering, multi-step reasoning, and autonomous AI agent operations.

## BACKGROUND

Open-weight AI models publicly distribute their trained network parameters, enabling developers to run, fine-tune, and host AI models locally without relying on closed APIs. Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) is a neural network design where only specific sub-networks ('experts') are activated per input, allowing models to scale total capacity while keeping running costs manageable.
