Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro to Feature Hardware-Level AI Frame Fusion
Leaks indicate that Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975) mobile platform will feature a new hardware-level technology called "AI Frame Fusion." This feature will support AI-driven super resolution and frame generation using dedicated matrix ALUs within the GPU shaders. This hardware-level integration could significantly boost mobile gaming performance and visual quality by offloading upscaling and frame generation to dedicated silicon, reducing power consumption and thermal throttling. It marks a shift towards bringing desktop-class AI rendering technologies natively to mobile GPUs. The AI Frame Fusion hardware, consisting of two matrix ALUs designed for GEMM and convolution acceleration, is reportedly exclusive to the SM8975 and absent from the standard SM8950. The chip's die size is expected to increase to approximately 134 mm² to accommodate these hardware additions.

Super resolution and frame generation are techniques popularized in PC gaming by NVIDIA's DLSS and AMD's FSR to increase frame rates by rendering games at lower resolutions and using AI to upscale them. GEMM (General Matrix Multiplication) is a fundamental mathematical operation used in deep learning, and optical flow reprojection calculates the motion of pixels between frames to generate intermediate frames smoothly.
